Lymphedema

What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema can be defined as an accumulation of excessive protein, edema, chronic inflammation and fibrosis secondary to the impairment of the lymph vessels.

Who Has Lymphedema?

Primary lymphedema is usually due to either a congenital absence of or abnormalities in the lymphatic tissue. It can be hereditary (Milroy disease), come on during the onset of puberty (lymphedema praecox) or even later in life (lymphedema tarda).

Secondary lymphedema is generally caused by an obstruction or interruption of the lymphatic system, usually caused by malignancies, infection, trauma, excision or post-radiation fibrosis.

The lymphatic system cleans up excess fluid and waste from the body. If your system is sluggish, your body is not properly cleared of this fluid and waste, resulting in toxicity and lymphedema.

Treatment

Endermologie treatments have been shown to help relieve lymphedema by improving secondary lymphedema and lymphatic circulation in the treated area, as well as reducing secondary lymphedema of the arm post-mastectomy.

Cancer patients

The removal of lymph nodes brings about a disruption of the superficial and deeper lymph drainage pathways on the side they were removed from. This results in a predisposition to, or the immediate formation of the condition called lymphedema. If left untreated, it will become worse over time. A hardening of tissue as fibrosis or sclerosis will occur. Endermologie treatments have been shown to improve symptoms of lymphedema.

Any Side Effects?

They are minimal and may involve bruising or soreness in the areas treated. Many patients like the feel of Endermologie and find this temporary soreness a small price to pay. Those who are extremely sensitive to pain may find the procedure uncomfortable.
